What is Protein? and How to Make High Protein Recipes at Home

What is protein and the interest it plays as a part in the diet has grown a great deal lately.

Protein contains amino acids and is one of the building blocks of muscle tissue. Hair, skin, bone, and almost entirely every body part is also made of this component.  Protein helps produce new cells and repair existing ones throughout your body, such as hair, nails, skin, and bone.

There are over 20 different amino acids that come together to make complete and incomplete types of protein.

These are grouped together into 2 categories:  Essential and Non-Essential amino acids.

Complete proteins contain all the 8 essential amino acids. They are called essential not because you can do without the other ones, but because they cannot be made by our body. It is essential we include these in our diet. Animal-based foods such as meat, poultry, fish, and dairy are the best sources of complete protein. There are many fruits and vegetables that also contain complete proteins such as bananas, broccoli, carrots, and nuts.

Incomplete proteins do not contain the 8 essential amino acids. These proteins are made up of nonessential amino acids. Again, not because they are not needed but because your body can produce these on its own. Vegetables and grains are considered incomplete proteins. Two or more incomplete proteins can be combined to make a complete protein. Grains combined with nuts or seeds for example can be eaten together to create a complete protein.

Protein is used up by our bodies constantly so we must continually replace it to remain healthy. Lack of protein can cause growth failure, loss of muscle mass, a depressed immune system, lung problems, heart problems, and even death.

Especially for those people trying to lose weight, using High Protein Recipes diets has been very beneficial. Athletes choosing to gain weight or maintain muscle mass enlist a high protein diet to help them also.

How much protein does a person need each day?

There are conflicting reports as to the ideal amount of protein needed for a well-balanced diet. Reports suggest that an easy way to determine what you need is to divide your weight by 2. The number you get is the number of grams of protein needed each day. For example, if you weigh 120 lbs, you will need 60 grams each day.

Foods have nutritional labels on them which will list many important values, such as vitamin content, carbohydrates, cholesterol, fat, and calories. This is one place where you can find the amount of protein contained in each serving to help to maintain a balanced diet.

What foods contain protein?

High Protein Recipes can be made with beef, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy, seeds, nuts, and legumes, (which are black beans, soybeans, and lentils). Some fruits such as apricots, bananas, cherries, and grapes are also good sources of protein. Protein drink recipes have come a long way too and many now are tasty as well as nutritious.

The powders may be added to your recipe to supplement protein. The amount contained in foods will vary with each item and method of cooking, but some examples of the High Protein Recipes foods content would be: One cup of broccoli contains 2 grams, 1 slice of cheese: 4 grams, 1 serving of chicken breast 35 grams, 1 egg: 6 grams, 1 container yogurt: 5 grams,1 cup 2% milk: 8 grams, and  2 tablespoons peanut butter: 7 grams.

How much is a “portion” of Protein?

Knowing the proper amount of each food group to ensure a balanced diet plays a major role in good health. It’s been said that food portions have increased by 4 times in the last 20 years. Labels on packaged goods will indicate the serving size and amount of protein in grams for that serving. This makes it easy to figure out a portion size.

What about products for High Protein Recipes at Home (hamburgers, steak, fish, chicken) that are not packaged with the labels? Three ounces of cooked meats: fish, steak, or poultry is considered a proper portion.  This would look like about the size of a deck of cards. Even serving plates have increased in size, so you might take your plate and measure what it holds; consider using the following rule: Have half your plate contain vegetables and/or fruit, then 1/4 of its protein and 1/4 of its carbohydrates.
